I Actually Ate Everything in KFC and Here is What I Realized…

THAT RANDOM KFC THOUGHT

You know there are some days when there are just so many things on your mind and your coping mechanism is to actually be very still and let your mind wander to the things that made you happy? Yes, that is me right now.

So, I think it has been months since I last ate KFC just because I am trying to eat healthier and I am more occupied with discovering new stuff that would tickle my taste buds. I stumbled upon the list of everything they offer at https://menuph.com  and I realized I have tried everything, even their breakfast meals.

Well, in all honesty, I like their fries more than the chicken now. I think it’s because, like most restaurants where the main offering is chicken, they usually bank on what the outside tastes like. The skin can take you to ecstasy but the flesh is dry and almost bland. The numerous herbs and spices only enhanced the chicken skin, not the chicken meat. Of course, there’s the gravy. Good thing though that unlike a certain bee or clown, KFC is pretty generous with its gravy and would allow you to take as much as you want with your meal. Heck, even the Davaoeño Youtube pranksters Tukomi did a video before where they brought a whole pot of rice into KFC and baptized it with lots of gravy.

Wait, so what about their fries?

Well, their fries taste like chicken. Inside, outside, the aftertaste, that was what the old KFC chicken tasted like.

But, that does not mean I will stop eating KFC just because there are better chickens out there. See, when you get to my age, you fall into a cycle. KFC is part of that and will always be. Whenever my mom bugs me to go buy her a Streetwise Bucket Meal, I know that’s money of my pocket that’s never coming back but I know that I will end with a full tummy and warmer hearts around the house.

THAT KFC MENU ITEM WHICH IS ACTUALLY SIMPLE

So, what are the interesting 10 KFC menu items for me? Here they are:

1. Crispy Fries – It is not really that crispy but that is where it’s charm lies. The straightforward texture makes you appreciate the motley of herbs and spices.
2. California Maki Twister – I like the crunchiness of the chicken coupled with the sweetness of the mango that is enhanced by the seaweed’s unique texture.
3. Zinger – The breast fillet is not at all dry like their regular chicken but the sandwich is very filling and flavorful. It needs more spiciness to it though.
5. Korean BBQ Flavorshot Fully Loaded Meal – Sweet and spicy and peppery, this can actually compete with those who market their brands as Korean chicken because of its affordability and good quality.
6. Chicken Chops A la Carte – It should be renamed Chicken Chomp because you can just chomp on it like a flavor shot and it goes down easy because of it’s tenderness.
7. 1 pc. Chicken Meal – The classic meal I eat whenever I am hungry and there is a KFC nearby. As I have mentioned, the taste of the skin is immaculate but the flesh needs to be cooked thoroughly because there are many times I ate a chicken with some bloody parts. Also, the actual meat needs more of their secret herbs and spices.
8. Steak Rice Bowl – If you can’t afford a beef steak at a fast food restaurant, well here is the next best thing.
9. Egg Pandesal – Yes, this exists. And this is the cheapest menu item which is actually filling. Nope, don’t talk to me about fixins.
10. Arroz Caldo Regular – Again, something like this exists. But, instead of getting a soft chicken which is usually what gpes in an arroz caldo, you get KFC with the secret herbs and spices.

If you have noticed, I have not included any of the fixins because I think the quality and quantity of those are not justifiable when it comes to their prices.

A KFC menu item I wish would return is their milkshake. I remember buying it for just 89php each years ago and it can compete with the milkshakes other restaurants offer which cost 300php and above. It’s creamy, flavorful, and has real fruit bits.

THIS IS MY VERDICT THEN…

KFC is flawed yet Filipinos have so many memories associated with this. My earliest memory of KFC was when I was a little girl and I reserved a seat for my mom but another family took it so there was a bit of a squabble. Sure, it’s silly, but it’s my childhood. KFC is my childhood, as well as other fast food brands.

So, thank you, Colonel Sanders.
