Shots and Alternates: A ‘Hello, Universe’ Review
Synopsis: Ariel Dasalan (Janno Gibbs) is a former ace basketball player who missed a winning shot and ends up as a pest control employee, unlike his rival back then, Mac Morales (Gene Padilla). A rainy day and possibly the worst birthday of his life brings forth an unexpected blessing: a genie (Benjie Paras) who can take him to an alternate universe where manages to be “successful”.
As Xian Lim’s first mainstream film (he did direct a mini-series and an indie previously), this one’s pretty entertaining though slightly rough around the edges. It has that slick 90’s appeal, bolstered by the fact that Anjo Yllana (Rocky) plays the best friend of Ariel, and the duo were a riot in the 90’s hit show ‘Ober da Bakod’. However, what fits right into the hoop perfectly are the dramatic moments of the two comedians, as theirs loyalty to one another goes across the universes.
Sunshine Guimary (Lauren) is perfectly alluring in her short, yet well-placed scenes. Maui Taylor (Jennifer) is something to aspire for as devoted and smart wife to both of her husbands (varies with the universe). Ube Lola (Ariel’s mom) is a riot in her scenes. It’s really hard to think of anyone else playing the genie other than Benjie Paras, since he is both a comedian and a basketball player. Newcomers Mark Andaya (evil goon) and Darwin Tolentino (evil boss) were efficient and funny in their roles.
Xian’s cameo as commentator reminds me of Mike Myers, which leads me to think that may be the Austin Powers series inspired his concept and direction here, with the chicks, goons, and the comedy of manners. He definitely went full-on “90’s kid” by paying homage to the action stars of that era.
When you’re down and full of regret about things that cannot be changed, ‘Hello Universe’ is a good picker-me-upper. It will remind you of how there are shots that are meant for us, even if we end up in the vast infinity of alternate universes.
This film is produced by Viva Entertainment and has started screening in cinemas nationwide last January 28. As of writing, it is still showing in major cinemas like Gateway, Robinsons Place Manila, SM City BF Parañaque, SM City North EDSA, etc.
