Chinese Businessman Herry Tan Fights Back
Even the rich have problems.
In this case, one man’s money troubles causes affliction to another, with threats allegedly being made. Surprisingly, it was said to be Michael Sy Lao, who owes Manadaluyong Chinese Chamber of Commerce VP Herry Tan, a vast sum amounting to PhP2.568 million.
It all started when a colleague introduced them and Lao rented a warehouse for his business. However, the problem started when after Lao’s first two checks had cleared, the next ones bounced due to insufficient funds.
An attempt to alleviate the situation was made when Tan was given a rediscounted check, which was discovered to be only less than a third of its value upon deductions.
So, the situation went from bad to worse. Heated discussions were made over the phone. Tan called him out for empty promises until eventually Lao snapped back, boasting about his connections and what he could to to him and his family.
A spot check of the warehouse revealed Lao has vacated it without any notice. There was also a question of whether he had a valid operating license to begin with.
Tan also lamented his lack of empathy, recounting the time that he mentioned to him that he needed the money to help a relative with severe COVID-19 case. Aside from not paying a cent, he did not offer any sympathy.
Thie said relative eventually died.
Last Aug. 2, Herry Tan formally filed a complaint at the new NBI main office in Araneta Avenue. He was accompanied by friend and colleage, the lady indie film producer Ms. Baby Go.
Tan knows it is human to err and despite the financial and psychological burden this person has bestowed upon him, he is willing to forgive. He does not even ask for an apology from Lao. He just wants the money that he is owed, money which could have been used to save a life.
